What does KBOO have in common with the Titanic? Several things. First of all, one can attempt to rearrange the deck chairs, but it is still headed toward the inevitable given its present course and the apparent machinations of those running the ship. Secondly, like the Titanic, the real workers, and majority of and the “passengers” (volunteers) are locked up in steerage with no input into their fate and the fate of KBOO, while a privileged and imperial few in “first class”, with the assistance of some minions and stowaways, take the ship to its doom. Thirdly, what established principles of leadership and “best practices” that existed at the time, were ignored for the glory of a privileged few (to set a speed record to New York in the case of the Titanic). Fourthly, when the Titanic met its fate, there were all sorts of cover-ups and finger-pointing that continue to this very day. KBOO is chartered and licensed as a non-profit collective. The non-profit part is easy to define. But what is a collective? A collective is a legal form of organization, composed of members with common interests and objectives, in which the collective membership, exercise both direct and indirect control, through an elected Board of Directors that then hires and directs the core paid staff. The jobs of the Board of Directors and paid staff is to act as stewards and trustees of the resources of KBOO, and, to translate the basic Vision, Values and Mission of KBOO into concrete policies and procedures, and, to administer them without fear or favor. It is not the job of the Board of Directors, nor of the staff, to appropriate and utilize the precious KBOO resources entrusted to them for their own personal job security and personal agenda. Their job is also to recruit, respect, cultivate and nurture the contributions of the volunteers without whom KBOO would not have the core of its production function—programming worth one’s time to listen to. One aspect of a collective that is clear is that the voting on who will serve on the Board of Directors, and thus who will hire and hold accountable the paid staff must be free, fair, open and respected. This means that if someone has been elected to the Board in a fair election, it is a serious matter if any individual is denied the ability to take and hold his or her position without cause or under pretexts. An example, that has cost KBOO already many thousands of dollars in lawsuits, are the cases of Michael Popadopoulos and Scott Forrester, one of whom, Michael Papadopoulos, was duly elected to, yet denied to sit on, the Board of Directors, with the result that he was forced to launch a lawsuit that is still pending. Scott Forrester has been banned not only from KBOO premises, but even from KBOO events not on the KBOO premises, by summary decree apparently without even the basics of due process. A collective means that the organization represents and balances contending interests and perspectives of the membership without fear or favor to any “insiders” who manage to get more “face time” with the paid staff and directors. That means that there should be established policies, procedures and criteria for all aspects of KBOO operations and staffing that are collectively evolved, understood by all, and administered without fear or favor; this appears not to be what is going on at KBOO. Committees at KBOO are “advisory” only with final decisions on programming, for instance, made essentially by one person, Christ Merrick the Programming Director, who feels free to cancel long-term programming with little or no warning to the programmers or respect for their contributions in the past, while setting up alternate programming often not vetted through any established procedures to which others have been held. Since programming is critical and at the core of what KBOO does, arbitrary, capricious and totally unaccountable decision making on the part of a few, shows contempt not only for the membership whose hard-earned and limited incomes for donations pay the staff salaries, but also contempt for what a collective and KBOO are supposed to be all about. Basically, it appears that membership at KBOO is seen primarily as a source of funds for the job security of a few. The problems that have allegedly surfaced at other collectives such as KPFI and WBAI appear to be raging at KBOO as well. These alleged machinations have included:
What is some of the evidence for these allegations? Take the following email from Mr. Merrick sent to the whole Board of Directors and others with respect to possible settlement in the lawsuit by Michael Papadopoulos, elected to the Board of Directors but denied taking his position on the basis first, of his not being a U.S. citizen, and then later on the grounds that he was a adverse litigant against KBOO and thus would be in a conflict-of-interest position sitting on the KBOO Board. From Mr. Merrick:
The executive committee (and Becky) has received our attorney’s e-mails regarding the situation. The preliminary hearing in October had one major result, the judge stated that both parties should settle out of court, and that he would agree to be the settlement judge. Mr. Papadopoulos and his attorney have been uncooperative in this regard, and we may still mhave to go to court. His settlement offer is that we admit we’re a bunch of lying scum and put him on the board, our settlement offer is that he lies down in an open grave and we cover it with a “compostable” material.” ~ Chris Merrick The gentleman, Michael Papadopoulos, an 80-year-old former professor of mathematics and long-time KBOO volunteer and supporter, to whom Merrick is referring, does not deserve this kind of vile rhetoric and wish for his demise no matter what kind of “bad blood” may be between them. Former Board of Directors member Jim Craven, whose Blackfoot Name is Omahkohkiaaiipooyii, and a co-host, along with Dean Lookinghawk and Louis Sowa, of the summarily cancelled show “Mitakuye Oyasin”, upon receipt of this message as part of a report to the Board of Directors, wrote the following in protest to Merrick’s rant: “Imagine if you replaced the name Popadopoulos with say the name Obama. How would say the Secret Service regard the statement that one looks forward to a “settlement” or situation involving say Obama, or LBJ, or some president, winding up in an open grave to be covered over with a ‘compostable’ (presumably a tribute to “Green Thinking” at KBOO) material.? Do you think the Secret Service would not see this as some kind of death threat or at minimum, a wish for the death of someone? How do you think Michael’s lawyer, or the judge, will regard this bit of wishful expression, not only for Michael’s death (damn a capital offense for offending Merrick), but expression of some apparent proto-psychopathic delight in pouring “compostable’ material over his dead body? What if Michael P swears out a complaint for an apparent death threat or perhaps that he “feels” threatened? And to top it all off, this 80 year old man is banned from KBOO as some kind of threat, while you got this program director sending out open messages expressing a desire to see him dead. What if he files for an injunction against Merrick being anywhere near him?
~Jim Craven/Omahkohkiaaiipooyii “Greetings, After reading the draft of the staff report submitted by Chris, I ask that you please replace it with the edited version that I am attaching in this email. I thank Chris for his work in pulling the information together for this report, but found a few items that I feel very strongly were not staff’s purview, or needed clarification. As Chris and I were assigned the responsibility together of communicating between the staff and board, I would be remiss in my duties to not address these items. Please view the original report from Chris (sent 11/16) as a draft, only. Please use the attached report for your official communication and public record. For your convenience, I’ve also included the text in the body of this email.” ~Ani Haines In response to this email, Jim Craven wrote the following: Time for some transparency, accountability and house cleaning at KBOO. One more time: KBOO is a collective to be run by and for the interests of the collective and not some private little cult, bubble-refuge for the unemployable, a feudal estate, a military barracks, a sorority/fraternity or some little clique. This nonsense that the first November Board report was only a “draft” lacking a consensus input is so lame and transparent that it will never fly in any venue requiring more than room temperature IQ. Imagine if someone says profanity on the air and then says it was only an air check and kind of “draft broadcast” before the real thing. Priceless, truly priceless. I’m sure the FCC would love that excuse. No one has a [divinely ordained]”right” to work at KBOO; especially for a salary when so many members have no work and no salaries yet donate what little they have expecting that the station will be run according to its Values, Vision and Mission. They have a right to expect that their precious contributions be used for the preservation of KBOO, not someone’s job who has perhaps lost the right to keep it with behaviors and intrigues that threaten the existence of KBOO.
This response finally brought a kind of “apology” from Mr. Merrick (no indication that was sent to Michael Popadopoulos).
“Apology, No doubt, I’ll apologize for the remark about Mr. Papadopoulos, and I do appreciate Ani stepping in to revise the report (which had my name on it alone, the staff were not involved in my personal editorial). What else? late night, getting ready to leave on a vacation, a flurry of hostile and unprofessional e-mails from opposing counsel directed at us, I thought about it for a while, a bad joke, who knows. We’ve put up with outright lies from Papadopoulos and Forrester, slander about law-breaking, no doubt, however, I should not have sunk to the occasion.” One of the fundamental requirements of minimally competent management, in addition to serious thought before putting anything to paper, is the ability and integrity to fully admit and correct—not compound or equivocate—mistakes and errors that might threaten the institution. Another requirement is for management, in their behavior and utterances, not give any reason for anyone to question that they will receive a fair, impartial and unbiased hearing of their complaints and suggestions for KBOO’s development. Here we have Mr. Merrick, dragged kicking and screaming (metaphorically speaking) into putting out an “apology”, which serves to launch even more allegations against Mr. Papadopoulos, Mr. Forrester and even their attorney, in emails to the Board and Staff at KBOO that were not sent to these gentlemen, KBOO members even if banned from the premises, to be answered by them; again contempt for basic due process for them. Further, in his “apology”, Mr. Merrick stipulates, or at least tacitly suggests, that the revised “report” to the Board by Ani Haines, was basically a sanitation job, or cover-up, for which he appears grateful, on the original report, apparently in order to minimize any blowback effects from this reckless and insensitive rant. And it will be the hard-earned donations of the membership of KBOO that will pay for any costly litigation, or prolongation of current litigation, as a result of this. This is not the only example of apparent playing fast and loose with the name, standing, scarce resources and even license of KBOO. At a Finance meeting, open to all KBOO members and not even a closed session of the Board, it was proposed to reduce the salary of Jenka Sodeberg, the News Director presently on leave from KBOO, from $31,000 per year down to $28,500. Why? Reduced workload? Reduced hours? KBOO reorganization? Discipline? No none of these were given as the reason. What was the reason given? It was to reduce her salary specifically, and in the required amount, to qualify (income below $29,000) for low-income housing, with the caveat that when she qualified for low income housing, and the maximum allowable income threshold was COLA adjusted upwards, her salary could be later adjusted upward back to where it was. Former Board member Jim Craven, openly protested this at the meeting (calling these machinations potential fraud against low-income housing and potential solicitation to join in a conspiracy to defraud low-income housing—while KBOO has members who are homeless, on waiting lists for low-income housing and will never see $31,000 per year or anything close to it) and subsequently wrote the following to the Board and KBOO staff–never answered or rebutted: “…But this apparent coddling of Merrick and his apparent backroom intrigues and apparent chronic mendacity, dismissing his hateful wish for the death of Michael P as just “his kind of humor”… plus the intrigue associated with attempts to craft Jenka’s salary reduction to qualify her for low income housing (which I regard as solicitation of me and others to join in a conspiracy to defraud low-income housing at the expense of those who truly need it and are on long waiting lists), all of this stuff puts KBOO in a bad position and bears on the rights of the Membership to know just what is being done in their name, by whom and with what potential consequences on KBOO. So I will merely be putting out my own take on all that is going on at KBOO and any parallels with other cooperatives like KPFI and WBAI…” Sir Walter Scott once wrote: “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” He meant of course that lies and cover-ups can only beget more of the same. A possible example of this principle in action is how allegations of sexual harassment against former station manager Arthur Davis were handled by some members of the Board. Instead of recusing themselves from investigating the complaint due to friendships with Davis, some members of the Board undertook to conduct their own investigation internally rather than call in outside investigators (which they wound up having to do anyway). The result was Davis leaving KBOO with the complainant against him, and others on the Board and in the membership, feeling that her complaint had not been fairly handled in an unbiased and objective way, with the cause of his leaving, that qualified him for unemployment benefits, given as KBOO reorganization dropping the position of Station Manager (Had someone been hired to replace him, or even with the appointment of an interim station manager, the basic question for those considering his application for unemployment benefits would have been: “Why did he leave if he has been replaced as station manager and thus no real “reorganization”?) KBOO remains without a station manager as this position has been dropped with Davis’ former duties reassigned to others. These are but some of the alleged machinations presented to this reporter by several KBOO members and former Board members that need to be investigated, and not by the very persons against whom any allegations have been made, or by some “advisory only” committees that allegedly act as rubber stamps for management, as is allegedly the usual at KBOO. Not only does the potential exist for misuse of the donations of the KBOO membership by a few who appear to regard the resources placed with them in trust by the membership as their own personal favor factory and job security/creation service for friends, but there is the potential for loss of FCC licensing, and more costly litigation and legal representation, if some of this alleged intrigue is substantiated and picked up by law enforcement, employment security or low-income housing authorities. All of these incidents and allegations have, so far, been kept from the general KBOO membership. At the KBOO membership meeting, not at KBOO premises but elsewhere, Mr. Merrick sought to draft individuals for “security” to keep out banned persons like Mr. Papadopoulos, who was on the ballot for the position to which he had already been elected, even though the persons banned were banned only from KBOO premises, other than for Board meetings, as they are still members. This was but another example of preemptive profiling, marginalization and demonization of certain individuals, banned from non-KBOO premises, even with no threats that these individuals would act in any ways threatening to anyone. More will follow on other aspects of KBOO operations, programming decisions, and personnel policies and actions. This appears to be a story in genesis with many aspects and issues yet to be explored and investigated by competent parties that will respect the very principles of due process for the accused that some of them allegedly were contemptuous of when applied to others against whom they were making their own allegations.

Коллектив – легальная форма организации, состоящая из людей с одинаковыми интересами и целями, где все члены коллектива осуществляют прямой и непрямой контроль при помощи совета директоров, которые затем нанимают и направляют основной наемный персонал. Работа и задачи совета директоров и наемных сотрудников радиостанции заключаются в том, чтобы выступать в роли распорядителей и попечителей ресурсов КВОО, следуя ценностям, видению и миссии радиостанции и беспристрастно используя их в политике и процедурах. Совет директоров и наемные сотрудники не должны обладать и использовать драгоценные ресурсы радиостанции, доверенные им, в личных целях и для укрепления собственных позиций. Мы имеем дело с мистером Мерриком, которого чуть ли не силой заставили (метафорично выражаясь) выдавить из себя «извинения», могущие послужить дополнительной пищей для обвинений со стороны Пападопулоса, Форрестера и их адвокатов; поскольку, даже если им запретили доступ на территорию радиостанции, их письма требуют ответа. Мы снова наблюдаем презрение к принятым правилам и процедурам. Далее, в своем «извинении» мистер Меррик оговаривает, или, по меньшей мере, молчаливо предполагает, что исправленный отчет совету директоров, полученный ими от Ани Хэйнс, был покрытием его ошибок и за это он выражает благодарность, скорее всего для того, чтобы избежать «эффекта бумеранга» за свою опрометчивую и бессмысленную тираду. И что отчисления от средств, заработанных тяжелым трудом членов радиостанции, пойдут на оплату судебной тяжбы.
«Это очевидное проявление Меррика и его закулисных интриг вкупе с хронической лживостью, называть пожелании смерти Майклу Пападопулосу «своеобразным юмором»… в сочетании с попыткой снизить зарплату Дженке для того, чтобы она могла получить жилье по программе обеспечения жильем малообеспеченных граждан (что я могу рассматривать как попытку привлечь меня и других к участию в обмане государства и дискредитации самой программы, и еще за счет тех, кто по-настоящему в этом нуждается и долго значится в списках ожидания), все это ставит КВОО в очень неловкое положение и затрагивает всех членов радиостанции. Они имеют право знать, что происходит якобы от их имени, кто за этим стоит и какие это может иметь последствия для КВОО. Поэтому я отказываюсь принимать в этом участие»…
Однажды сэр Вальтер Скотт написал: «Что за запутанную сеть мы плетем, когда впервые произносим ложь». Он имел в виду, что обман и попытки его скрыть будут влечь за собой еще больше лжи. Пример тому – обвинение в сексуальном домогательстве в отношении бывшего управляющего радиостанцией Артура Дэвиса. Вместо того, чтобы провести надлежащее расследование этой жалобы, некоторые члены совета, состоявшие в дружеских отношениях с Дэвисом, предпочли провести собственное расследование без привлечения непредвзятых лиц (и в конце концов они были вынуждены это сделать). В результате Дэвис покинул радиостанцию, против него было выдвинуто обвинение, а прочие члены совета директоров и сотрудники КВОО, осознавая, что жалоба пострадавшей не была рассмотрена должным образом и рассмотрена честно и беспристрастно, уволили его по причине реорганизации, что позволило ему претендовать на льготы по безработице, в должности менеджера радиостанции. (Кто впоследствии занял его место и имела ли место реорганизация?) По этой причине на радиостанции отсутствует менеджер радиостанции, а его должностные обязанности распределены среди других. Это всего лишь несколько примеров махинаций, предоставленных несколькими членами КВОО и бывшими членами совета директоров, которые необходимо расследовать. Естественно, расследоваться они должны не теми лицами, которые в них обвиняются, или же их марионетками. Существует огромная вероятность не только того, что средства КВОО расходуются не по назначению и рассматриваются некоторыми как их личная гарантия работы или теплого местечка для друзей, но возможная потеря лицензии Федеральной службы связи, а также дорогостоящих судебных процессов, если будут поданы иски в суд. В основном, вся эта информация скрывается от большинства членов КВОО. На собрании членов КВОО, не на территории радиостанции, мистер Меррик выделил охрану, чтобы не допустить к участию мистера Пападопулоса, который был в избирательных списках и был уже выбран в члены совета директоров, хотя те, кому запрещен доступ на территорию самого радио, за исключением присутствия на совете директоров, имеют право в них участвовать, поскольку по прежнему являются членами коллектива. Это еще один яркий пример репрессивных мер в отношении несогласных с происходящим, невзирая на то, что эти люди не представляют ни малейшей угрозы для кого-либо. As some listeners know, all American Indian shows on KBOO have been under attack from KBOO sit in manager Chris Merrick for the past several of months. All correspondence of canceling shows and rescheduling shows have been the coordination of Chris Merrick without the recognition of any programming committee until such a final notice on Dec 12-16-2010 just four hours before the Mitakuye Oyasin program
Although Mitakuye Oyasin was given special attention in retaliation for being non conformist to:
* backroom cliques dominating programming for themselves and their buddies;
* contempt for the basic responsibilities of stewardship and trusteeship of funds;
* contempt for the notion of policies applied freely and fairly, without fear or favor to all;
* cover-ups of basic mistakes and costly errors coupled with reprisals against those who discovered and exposed them;
* high turnover rates on the Board of Directors; staff and directors insulated, with station funds, from any personal legal accountability for screw-ups, even when in pursuit of personal agenda;
* setting high fund-raising targets, in the context of the current deep recession and high rates of unemployment, then voting themselves pay raises without any evidence of ability to sustain them or cause for them in terms of any proved increased performance by staff and directors;
* no apparent problem with putting out outright and provable falsehoods to the membership and to individual members of the Board of Directors;
In replacement of all american indian shows KBOO has added one “Native American” show with very malleable host.

I see that our show is listed in the on line guide for the next two weeks. I talked to Rebeca and to John Mackey. John said that the staff considers you to be the primary host, so hope that you can make it this Thursday? Also we need to have a guest if possible such as Russell Means. You should talk to Rebeca as her continued support for the show is important.

The program committee made the consensual decision at the December meeting to place “Tillicum Wawa” on the schedule as a weekly program, and to remove “Mitakuye Oyasin” from the schedule, effective immediately. I am sorry to give you the bad news on such short notice. This does not effect either of your current personnel or volunteer situatuations. Thanks very much for the time you put in on the recent pilot programs.

Chris Merrick has been quoted as saying Mitakuyes Oyasin; The show that just won’t go away”, But not if he has anything to do with it. For the past several months Chris Merrick has rearranging the normal scheduling of Mitakuye Oyasin in an attempt to get the listener confused about programming times and schedules even goig as far as to cancel a traditional show of Mitakuye Oyasin “Genocide cover up day” on thanksgiving day. Then playing it off as if some kind of communication and programming error.

Brazilian Indians held prisoner by gunmen Бразильские индейцы – в заложниках у бандитов
| A large group of Guarani Indians in Brazil is being held prisoner by gunmen hired by ranchers. The gunmen have cut off the Indians’ access to food, water and health care since they surrounded their community one month ago.
The gunmen began to threaten the Guarani and prevent anyone from leaving or entering the area soon after the Indians returned to their ancestral land, which is now occupied by the Triunfo (“Triumph”) ranch. Despite pleas from the Guarani for police assistance and urgent medical care, their community, known as Ypo’i, is still besieged. A team from the federal health ministry has allegedly refused to enter, citing ‘security problems’. Reports indicate that the only officials who have entered the community with the gunmen’s agreement is a team from Brazil’s Indian Affairs Department FUNAI, who delivered some food parcels. Survival has written to the Brazilian authorities demanding immediate police action to lift the siege of the community. The last time the Guarani of Ypo’i attempted to reoccupy their land, in October 2009, they were violently attacked by gunmen. The body of one community member, Genivaldo Verá, was later found dead and badly bruised in a nearby river. Although extreme, the conflict is just one of many in which the Guarani of Mato Grosso do Sul state, in southern Brazil, attempt to recover small fragments of their ancestral land in the face of bitter resistance from wealthy ranchers and farmers who frequently resort to violence. Most Guarani live in overcrowded reserves or in makeshift camps on the side of highways, as depicted in the recent film ‘Birdwatchers’. In a letter to President Lula last month Guarani leaders said, ‘We are sure that you want to be remembered as a good President for this country and for humanity; you don’t want to be remembered for killing our tribe. If you do not map out our land, unfortunately that is what will continue to happen to us.’ Survival’s Director, Stephen Corry, said today, ‘Anyone unfamiliar with the Guarani’s appalling plight would be staggered that the authorities are prepared to stand by and watch a peaceful and defenceless community being held hostage in this way. The Guarani, though, have long known that their land is in the hands of people prepared to resort to violent intimidation to hold on to it – and that the authorities too often stand by and do nothing.’ |

KBOO Cancels Mitakuye Oyasin Radio Show In Portland OR USA
The hosts of a radio show called “Mitakuye Oyasin” in Portland, Oregon got a notice from the manager that the show is being canceled on a pretext that the previous host claimed the name of the show to be a trademark, which is not true and will rise lots of objections if there is such an attempt.

We’ve been following one of your evening radio shows Mitakuye Oyasin for about a year now, regardless of the time or language differences. As a matter fact it has been recommended and adopted by our English learning students who have found it not only helpful for learning a language, but quite enjoyable, exciting and insightful into indigenous cultures from the other hemisphere, with traditional songs and stories.
With regards to such a program we have learned to understand the true meaning of being “we are all related” and could draw attention of the people from this part of the world to the problems of your people.
In our understanding the “Mitakuye Oyasin” show is a collective representation of all North American indigenous nations, all peoples, not to exclude the host and guest of the show.
It has now been brought to our attention by inquiry that the Mitakuye Oyasin show has been canceled due to inadequate, despot, if not fascist, management. As far as we are concerned, the show is popular and has audience not only in three of our countries, but include broadcasting to Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland and many others also.
Thus, the show being so popular not only in Portland, Oregon, USA, we can conclude that it was not a matter of its profitability or lack of popularity with the audience. It is our opinion, and it is a shame that a good and interesting show can be closed on some uncertain reasons, and all that is happening in the country that claims to be the nurturing cradle of democracy and justice.

| There are many roads in life, but there are two that are important; the Red Road and the Black Road. They represent good and bad in every one’s life. It’s the two choices people have to make frequently in life. The Red Road is the good way, the good side, and the right choice. It is a road that is difficult with dangers and obstacles that are hard to travel on. The Black Road is the bad way, the bad side, and the wrong choice. The Black Road is wide and easy to travel. The Red Road and the Black Road appear in our lives not as roads but as the personifications of right and wrong, good and bad, light and dark.
The Lakota never were known to accumulate material goods. It was never done in pursuit of wealth; it was done to get around hard times or to help someone who ran short. Generosity has its rewards. The lack of it has its consequences. It was not practical for a nomadic people to accumulate too much because it only meant more to haul when the camp moved, which could be up to three or four times a year. The more you owned, the more you hauled. Truth is the marker along the roads we travel in life. The Red Road has many markers. If you choose the Black Road, there is only the illusion of truth. We can be influenced by the truth or by illusion. Sometimes truth is like the wind. You cannot see it, but you can see the effect it has. Truth is also like the sunrise and sunset. We see the sun come up over the eastern horizon in the morning and then disappear behind the western horizon in the evening. From the perspective of our existence on a spinning globe, the sun appears to “rise” and “set.” In reality the sun does neither. Living a humble and giving life keeps one on the path of the Red Road. Truth is the result of the trials and errors of life, the lessons we have learned such as “Without evil, goodness would be harder to recognize,” or “The first casualty of war is truth,” or “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” Some rise out of the illusions we have acquired. The truth is sometimes painful, but without it there is only illusion. The truth is the Lakota still walk the face of the earth. The truth is the Lakota survived traumatic change and are wiser and stronger because of it. The illusion is that the Lakota were defeated by a stronger, better, more moral people with more God-given rights than what the Lakota had. The truth is the Lakota were overwhelmed by numbers; more people with more guns needing more and more of what the Lakota had. The illusion is that the Lakota are a conquered people. Life goes on, it continues to cycle. The sun comes up each morning and with it comes new opportunity, new hope. No matter what kind of day it was before, no matter what victories were celebrated, each new day is a chance to set the record straight, atone for a mistake, achieve another victory, and take another step on your journey. Each new day is a chance to be renewed and reborn-another opportunity to be part of the circle that is life, knowing that it is a journey, not a race, and that one does not travel it alone. To walk the Red Road is to know sacrifice and suffering. It is to understand humility. It is the ability to stand naked before the Great Mystery in all things for your wrong doings, for your lack of strength, for your non-compassionate ways and for your arrogance. Because to walk the Red Road, you always know you can do better. And you know when you do good things it is through the Great Mystery and you are grateful. To walk the Red Road is to know you stand on equal ground with all living things. It is to know that because you were born human, it gives you superiority over nothing. It is to know that every creation carries a spirit and the river knows more than you do. The wind is wiser then you are. Animal people carry wisdom and YOU can learn from every one of them because they have something you do not. They are void of evil thoughts. They wish vengeance on no one and seek justice. To walk the Red Road, you have the Great Mystery’s given rights. You have the right to pray, you have the right to dance, you have the right to think, you have the right to protect, you have the right to know Mother, you have the right to dream, you have the right to vision, you have the right to teach, you have the right to learn, you have a right to grieve, you have a right to happiness, you have the right to fix wrongs, you have the right to truth and you have a right to the Spirit World. To Walk the Red Road is to know your Ancestors; to call to them for assistance. It is to know that there is good medicine and there is bad medicine. It is to know that Evil exists but is cowardly as it is often in disguise. It is to know there are evil spirits who are in constant watch for a way to gain strength for themselves at the expense of you. To Walk the Red Road, you have far less fear at being wrong because you know that life is a journey, a continuous circle, a sacred hoop. Mistakes will be made and mistakes can be corrected if you will be humble, for if you cannot be humble you will never know when you have made a mistake. If you walk the Red Road you know that every sorrow leads to a better understanding. Every horror cannot be explained but can offer growth. To Walk the Red Road is to look for beauty in all things. To Walk the Red Road is to know you will one day cross to the Spirit World and you will be not afraid. |
В нашей жизни много путей и дорог, но две из них самые важные – Красный путь и Черный путь. Они олицетворяют добро и зло, и в жизни нам часто приходится делать выбор, каким путем следовать. Красный путь – путь добра, верное видение и правильный выбор. Это нелегкий путь, полный опасностей и препятствий, которые нам приходится преодолевать. Черный путь – путь зла, неверное видение и неправильный выбор. Черный путь широк, и следовать ему просто. Эти два пути – не просто дороги, а олицетворение правильного и неверного, добра и зла, света и тьмы.
Лакота никогда не знали стремления накапливать материальные блага. Они никогда не стремились к богатству; все, что они собирали, было предназначено для того, чтобы пережить сложные времена или оказать помощь нуждающемуся. Щедрость всегда вознаграждается, а ее отсутствие имеет свои последствия. Для кочевого народа было непрактично накапливать слишком много , так как это только усложняло кочевку, которая происходила три или четыре раза в год. Чем больше вещей у вас было, тем больше вам приходилось тащить. Правда – веха на пути, которому мы следуем. На Красном пути много знаков. Если вы сделаете выбор в пользу Черного пути, то вы найдете только иллюзию правды. На нас оказывает влияние как правда, так и иллюзия. Иногда правда подобна дыханию ветра. Ее нельзя увидеть, но можно ощутить ее воздействие. Правда подобна восходу и закату. Мы видим, как утром на востоке встает солнце и садится вечером на западе. Поскольку наша Земля вращается, кажется, что солнце «всходит» и«заходит». На самом же деле не происходит и того, ни другого. Живя скромно и даря жизнь, мы следуем по Красному пути. Правда – результат наших проб и ошибок, уроки, которые мы получили. Например: «Если бы не было зла, было бы труднее распознать добро», или «Истина – самая первая жертва войны», или «Птица в руках стоит двух в кустах». Некоторые истины рождаются из прежних иллюзий. Иногда правда бывает мучительной и болезненной, но без этого она была бы всего лишь иллюзией. Правда – то, что лакота до сих пор существуют. Правда – то, что народ выстоял и стал сильнее и мудрее. Иллюзия заключается в том, что лакота были побеждены более сильными, лучшими людьми с большими правами, дарованными им Богом. Истина заключается в том, что лакота превзошли численностью – большим количеством людей и пушек, алчущих обладать всем, что принадлежало лакота. То, что лакота покоренный народ – иллюзия. Жизнь продолжается, по-прежнему двигаясь по кругу. Солнце всходит каждое утро, а с ним приходит новая возможность, новая надежда. Неважно, что было вчера, неважно, какие победы были одержаны, – каждый новый день – это возможность новых достижений, совершения новых ошибок, одержания новых побед – еще один шаг на нашем пути. Каждый день – это обновление и возрождение, еще одна возможность быть частью круга – нашей жизни, понимая, что это путешествие, а не гонка, и что мы не одиноки на нашем пути. Чтобы следовать Красным путем, человеку предстоит изведать жертвы и страдания и познать смирение. Это возможность предстать обнаженным перед Великой Тайной со всеми проступками, гордыней, недостатком смелости и сострадания. Избрав этот путь, вы понимаете, что можно исправиться. И вы осознаете, что когда вы делаете что-то хорошее, оно исходит от Великой Тайны, и вы испытываете благодарность. Следовать Красным путем – сознавать, что вы равны всему сущему на земле. То, что вы рождены человеком, не дает вам преимущества перед другими творениями. Это понимание того, что каждое создание имеет душу и что река знает больше, чем вы. Ветер мудрее вас. Животные обладают мудростью, и вы можете учиться у каждого из них, потому что у них есть то, чего нет у вас. У них нет недобрых мыслей. Они не знают мести, но ищут справедливости. Когда мы следуем Красным путем, Великая Тайна дарует нам права. У нас есть право молиться, право танцевать, право мыслить, право защищать, право на видение, право учить, право учиться, право скорбеть и право радоваться, право исправлять ошибки, право на правду и право общаться с миром духов. Идти по этому пути означает чтить своих предков и просить их о помощи. Понимать, что есть добрые и злые силы. Помнить, что зло существует, но что оно трусливо и часто бывает замаскированным. Злые духи постоянно следят за вами и стремятся стать сильнее за ваш счет. Следуя Красным путем, вы меньше боитесь ошибаться, поскольку у вас есть понимание того, что наша жизнь – это путешествие, непрерывный круг, священный обруч. Ошибки неизбежны, но, проявив смирение, их можно будет исправить; если не познать смирения, то мы никогда не узнаем, где и в чем мы совершили ошибку. Идя по Красному пути, вы будете знать, что каждое огорчение ведет к познанию и пониманию. Не все ужасные вещи можно объяснить, однако они могут помочь нам расти. Следовать Красным путем – уметь видеть красоту всего сущего. Идти этим путем – знать, что однажды мы перейдем в мир духов и, когда этот день придет, мы не будем испытывать страх. |
